School year's structure in the USA

School year's structure in the USA?
I have to write a paper about the USA teaching system and I don't know anything about these stuff, because I live in Europe, I searched a lot on the net but I didn't find any useful and exact info. I'd need some details about when the school year begins when does it end, about brakes, everything that related to school in the USA. Thank you!!

a problem for you right now is that it is sunday,7:30AM in on east coast, and 3:30AM in california, so there are not a lot of school kids up right now, maybe. I was in school long ago, and things have changed a lot. Here are a few things: as in europe, we have kindergarten, but attendance is not mandatory. elementary school is 1st through 6th grade. we usually start 1st grade at 6 years old jr high school is 7th and 8th grade. high school is 9th through 12th grade. often, these groupings of grades are in different buildings so that the elementary kids don't mix with the junior high school kids, nor with the high school kids. there is a break for lunch, which is served at school, and usually one or two recess periods during the day. One big custom is that at the end of 12th grade, there is a "prom," which is a end of year dance at which usually only the 11th and 12th grade are allowed to attend. Sometimes, its just the 12th grade. most schools these days have both girls and boys in them, but there are some private schools where only girls go and some where only boys go. Here, "public" schools refer to schools funded by the government (via the taxpayers) that are open to everyone who lives here. We also have private schools that are secular (not religious based). We have church funded schools. The catholics have a lot of these. Publich schools here used to be neighborhood based. But prior to the 1960's, at least in the south, but also in some other places, black kids were not allowed to attend white schools. To correct this problem, in the 1960, the US supremem court ordered that schools be integrated, and the mechanism to do this was busing. So, black kids who did not live in a white neighborhood, nor close to the school, would be bused in so that there would be blacks at the school. And white kids were bused to schools in black neighborhoods so that there would be the presence of white kids there. Of course, this caused a lot of social discontent, and much of it still exists. People have written whole books about all this, so i won't try to tell you all about it here. But one result is that many places here in the south, lots of whites have left the public school system and have gone to sending their children to private schools. This state of affairs is not so in every part of the US, but more so in the south east. Sports: some elementary schools have football (american football) teams, but it usually starts in ernest at the junior high school level. the sports are american football, baseball, basket ball, and recently, soccer (european football), and sometimes golf. going to school football games is a lot of fun for everyone at the school. even in junior high school, there are dances from time to time. Well, i hope there is something in this that you can use. the article below may tell you more. If you want kids to answer you (I am 59) write your question again, 6 - 10 hours from now, like when its 7 - 11PM in London.
