Should I worry about the economic crisis in the USA if I'm planning to attend Harvard Summer School

Should I worry about the economic crisis in the USA if I'm planning to attend Harvard Summer School?
I'm planning to attend Harvard Summer School 2009. I'm from the Philippines and the dollar costs like 50 pesos here. Im worried that this economic crisis that the USA is experiencing might have effects on my finances. I'm already burdened with the 10 000 tuition fee of the school I hope this won't pose something worse.

Well, it is not clear how long this financial crisis will last. Honestly, you should plan for the worst. Start saving more money now by being frugal, so that you have a cushion in case you need it.

Will it be better to study in a 4 year university + med school in Philippines than USA

Will it be better to study in a 4 year university + med school in Philippines than USA?
I'm currently a high school student in USA with 3.9gpa. I know becoming a doctor is what i want, and I will do anything to become a doctor. I am still in dilemma, whether I go to 4 year university and med school in Philippines or stay here in California, USA. California is having a major budget cuts and tuition fees are very expensive, unlike in Philippines, it's much cheaper. But the quality of education is still better in USA. What i want is to be out of debt by the time I graduate which seems impossible if I study in USA.

Study in the Philippines is an option. You may know that at most universities in the Philippines, instruction begins at what is about the eleventh grade level in the US as the primary and secondary programs there usually total only ten years, not twelve. The best university in the Philippines is the University of Santo Tomas and I would certainly apply there as well as to others. You will have to pass the exam for foreign medical college graduates if you return to the USA to practice.
2 :
You have to take into account that overseas education is very expensive as the fees for overseas students are extremely high. Here in the UK Imperial college London is around £3000 for British citizens but if you're from another country or not an EU member country they are £29,000. Its very likely to be the same case in the Philippines as it is in most countries. I would stay at a University in the US as the education is good and you won't be paying very high fees, you could also seek financial help from the state. You could go to a university in another state.

Philippine tertiary education is less expensive but at par with other countries, except maybe in terms of high-tech instruments only. Choices: University of the Philippines Manila University of Santo Tomas

Can my school make me come to Church and religion class on every Sunday in my school uniform

Can my school make me come to Church and religion class on every Sunday in my school uniform?
Ok well my school used to go from 7:30-4:30 a long time ago but changed to 7:45-4:00. But to make up for the lost time, since we do not have Religion classes during the week (it's a Catholic school) they have us come to 8:00AM Mass every Sunday in our school uniforms. Then we have a quiz about what was talked about in Mass, and Religion class until 12:30PM. We can leave, but they have a chance for Religion extra credit points from 1:00 to 3:00PM, which my mom always makes me stay for, even though most of my friends go out or home. Is this fair? Can they do this? By the way, yes this is a school in the USA.

It depends on the contract that your parents signed with the parish.
2 :
You go to a private, Catholic school, so yes. This is the choice your parents have made, and these are the stipulations set down from the school. This is your religion, and school lasts only so many years of your life before you proceed on to college (with all luck, and you will most likely choose the college you will attend).

Wow that stinks. Sorry to say, but yes they can do that. Its a private school which means they run things how they want to. I go to a private school, but its Christian and way less strict. Occasionally though they do things like that and we have to go along with it, because it is the school in charge. Im sorry your mom makes you stay extra. Is there anyway you could change schools? Sounds like you dont like yours very much and you dont want to have to grow up hating what you believe. I hope it works out. God bless

I have never heard of a Catholic school that dropped religion as part of its curriculum! How ridiculous! Religious education without religion classes!?!? My daughter's catholic school requires 1 mass per month mandatory attendance at 8am in school uniform. Since that's close to impossible for us, I take her to a later mass and she still has no problem passing the quiz on Monday mornings (all the readings are the same). She does have religion class during the week too. As an adult, I think you should take an adult approach to this problem (an yes, I think it's a problem because I don't think a 6 day school week -- which is what this has become for you -- is unacceptable and unhealthy). I suggest that you and those who share your option (both students and parents) write a letter explaining how disruptive this has become. Not the attending church every Sunday part -- that's our obligation as Catholics -- the religion class until 12:30 and the "extra credit" until 3. Address it to the principal of your school. If that goes nowhere, I suggest that you move up to the archdiocese of your parish/school district. And then the cardinal...and so on. Make sure you have sufficient support from your parents BEFORE YOU START THIS. Explain to them how you feel and what you plan on doing about it. I hope that they will support you in your Endeavour. Your bottom line question was -- can they make you do this -- well, yes -- you are a minor and your parents are paying for your education and it's an education requirement at your school. But, I bet if you ask around, you'll get plenty of support and you might be able to change the "system"! That's what the USA was built on! (But not always the Catholic church, hehe!) Good luck!

If it is a catholic school then I presume that your parents have to pay tuition. Since it is therefore a private school, not a public school, yes, I believe they can. Personally, I think they would accomplish more by reinstating the religion class and giving you more of your own time back but so long as you continue to go there, you have to abide by their policies.
6 :
wow. You would love Australian Catholic school. It is 9am -3.30 (like state) and you do not have to go to the church on Sunday but they do go occasionally during school time
7 :
Private schools can make up their own rules. They aren't governed in the same way public school is.
8 :
Sounds like most of your friends are outside of private school. Since this is a requirement of the school, probably by your parents' choice, there is not a lot you can do. How can you make this fun and still get full credit? Are the instructors receptive to ideas from the students? Can you invite people from the outside to one of the masses? Can you make this up any other time during the week? Good luck!

Wikipedia has been blocked at my school because of the amount of "atheist" content on there

Wikipedia has been blocked at my school because of the amount of "atheist" content on there?
How can I convince the school board to unblock? I need it to research my assignments. They have also removed books from my library such The Da Vinci Code and The God Delusion because it is "unwanted content". How can I convince my school board otherwise? This is a school in the USA.

Nonsense. I don't believe you.
2 :
Sounds like censorship to me. I don't know if their actions are legal, but they are certainly ethically questionable, and you may be able to drag them to court over the establishment clause on this one. Not sure what the legal precedent is, I'm not a US citizen. Personally, I would not allow my children to attend a school with such bigoted and censoring attitudes. (I'm assuming it's a public school?)
3 :
Fine example of Christianity taking a huge dump on the Constitution
4 :
If the school collects public funds, they can't do that. But I assume your school isn't completely ignorant of such things, and you attend some religious private school. Uhh, I would say that if the religious position actually has merit, it should be able to stand up against even the harshest criticism. The truth never has to be afraid and censor the opposition.
5 :
Freedom of Speech and expression, something the US. prides itself on having when reality it does not if it does something stupid like that...I also don't believe you...
6 :
Sounds like a job for the ACLU or use a proxy server.. try www.proxify.com
7 :
Take the facts to someone at the ACLU and let them have a look (school board minutes, etc).
8 :
If you can't find a way to convince them then I suppose you can try another site that provides information like wikipedia. I'm sure wiki is not the only online encyclopedia around even if it is really helpful. It's really tough to convince a school board on your own. Your best bet will be a petition consisting of a LOT of students.
9 :
It's a school. You're under age. You have no rights. Get used to it. It's not for long anyway. Soon you'll be an adult, and then it will be your turn to tell kids what to do.
10 :
You don't need Wikipedia to research your assignments. There are plenty of other informative websites out there. Why, there's even this thing called a 'library', full of things known as 'books', which are just full of useful information. I'll bet your school even has one.

Christians are generally absolutely terrified of knowledge. Ask them what they are afraid of. In the grand marketplace of ideas they should feel confident, right?
