Hey Rakib, By 1900, 31 states required children to attend school from the ages of 8- to 14-years-old. As a result, by 1910, 72 percent of American children attended school. Half the nation's children attended one-room schools. In 1918, every state required students to complete elementary school. Lessons consisted of students reading aloud from their texts such as the McGuffey Readers, and placed emphasis on rote memorization. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/History_of_education_in_the_United_States -- This site, has a table that lists when each state enacted their compulsory schooling law: http://www.infoplease.com/ipa/A0112617.html Here's a college level history article that goes into great depth about the history of compulsory education in the US: http://www.eric.ed.gov/ERICDocs/data/ericdocs2sql/content_storage_01/0000019b/80/32/d2/1b.pdf Good luck! I hope this helps! :)

What age do USA kids leave school

What age do USA kids leave school?
Hi i'm from the U.K. I was wondering at what age do kids leave school in America? Here in the UK we leave school at 16 years old. High School in the UK is 11-16 Years old. But in America do you leave school at 18 and then do whatever you want like go to college? Its just a question that had been bugging me so I thought I might as wel ask :)

Kids in the United states generally get out of High School at 18, but some can be 17 or 19 depending on when they were enrolled. After you graduate you can choose if you want to go to college
2 :
yeah most of us graduate when we're 18. or 17 almost 18. high school for americans is 14-18 yrs old.
3 :
we go to school until 18 .. and then majority of ppl go to college (almost everyone) some take time off or go rite to their career. but yeah highschool is from 15-18 & u can drop out at the age of 16
4 :
we get out of school around 17-18 and most go to college but you can do whatever you please.
5 :
Im not from america , but im pretty sure its the same everywhere. 1-9th grade is 7/8-15/16 then 10-12 16/19 and then college.
6 :
age is a vague way to put it, idealogically we leave at 18, but i am older then most of my class and will have been 18 for 6 months before i graduate. we have to do 12 years of schooling and get a certain amount of credits.
7 :
We start school between the ages of 4-6 depending on when your birthday is compared to the starting of school. We can quit school at the age of 16 (or you could at my school several yrs ago, but you don't get to graduate thus no diploma) but graduate from school at 17-19 again depending on what age you where when you started school. High School is grades 9-12 and ages are usually 14-19 for the 4 yrs. Middle School is 6-8 or 7-8 in some places Elementary School is K-5 or K-6 again in some places
8 :
In America high school ends when we are 18. After that we go to college if we choose to. (almost all high paying jobs require at least two years of college.) We have to apply to a college and get accepted before we get in. After college there are more schools that we can go to if we want. these are Graduate School, Law School, and Medical School. Some jobs require one of these for example Lawers have to go to Law School and Doctors have to Medical School. Graduate School is for people who want to further their knoledge in one or more subjects, for example my Dad went to Graduate School to further his knoledge as an English major. (a major is a type of Degree you can get. I say this because i don't know if you have those in the U.K.) The grades go like this: Elementry School = Kindergarden - 5th grade (K,1st,2nd,3rd,4th,5th) Middle School = 6th grade - 8th grade (6th,7th,8th) High School = 9th grade - 12th grade (9th,10th,11th,12th,) the grades in high school are called "classes" and the classes in order are Freshman= 9th grade, Sophmore=10th grade, Junior=11th grade, Senior=12th grade
9 :
Yes, in America we leave high school at 18 and then we start college =))))

Easiest Medical School that is accredited by the USA

Easiest Medical School that is accredited by the USA?
So I'm an undergrad and I was wondering what the easiest med school to get into is? I'm concentrating in the Caribbean region but the only schools that I can find are Ross, Saba, and St. George. Any other schools that are accredited?

That's it for the Caribbean. University of Guadalajara in Guadalajara, Mexico, is well regarded internationally. NOT easy to get into, and not easy to complete the program successfully! If it's accredited in US, it is not easy. Med school is very demanding. And admission to any med school is very competitive.

In the state of Florida (and many other states), two personal fitness credits/courses are required for graduation of high school. One required course is Personal Fitness, which is both in the classroom teaching about health and out of the classroom doing physical activity. The other credit can come from a variety of courses including Volleyball, Basketball, Team Sports (a mix of all of them), or even Weightlifting. This all is a part of the government trying to cut down on obesity of teens in America and specifically Florida, by developing healthy and informed individuals.

usa does the amount of school tax varies by the number of childrens a person has?
in usa is the amount of tax of a man with 1 children and a man with 5 children same?does both man pays the same amount of tax?please help me
United States - 5 Answers

1 :
its not based on how many children you have
2 :
nope only with the cost and location of your home. if you have no kids, you still pay.
3 :
Children are dependants. The more dependants, the more deductions to your taxable income.
4 :
No. Public (state) schools are funded primarily through ad-valorem real property taxes in the US. The tax is based solely upon the value of the real property, nothing else.
5 :
There is not a "school tax" since school is free for everyone, but to pay for it, they charge you income tax (based on income) and property taxes (based on house value) Sounds free to me :<

where is the best school in the usa for a child with autism

where is the best school in the usa for a child with autism?

Special Education - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
This is entirely dependent on what method of therapy or therapies you prescribe to (ie. ABA, Floortime, SonRise, etc).
2 :
I have to agree that it's subjective as to which is the "best" since there are so many types and you might or might not agree with the fundimentals of a particular method. I recommend you collect info from as many sources as possible and look through them. If something doesn't feel right to you then I advise you go with your gut instincts. Just keep in mind that the earlier the intervention, the better. Also, depending on where on the spectrum the child is (ie, how mild-severe his autism is) will affect the outcome. With a preschool aged child, I believe it's important to have a home program that works with the school program as closely as possible or at least doesn't conflict with it. Good Luck and God Bless
3 :
There's a great school in Baltimore. It's Kennedy Krieger Institute's LEAP program. They use ABA (applied behavioral analysis) and TEACCH. They also offer services with a music therapist, art therapist, occupational therapist, speech therapist, aquatics instructor, physical education instructor. Speech and occupational therapy usually happens both individually and as a group. The kids have music, art, computers, PE, swim, and library at least once a week all year round (it's an extended school year program). Their pool is an indoor therapy pool. The school goes from ages 5-21 and has close to a 1:1 ratio of staff to students. They also have an awesome sensory room, complete with soothing sounds, columns of bubbles, fiber optic lights, etc. It's a great program

In the USA can one join law school right after high school

In the USA can one join law school right after high school?
or do they first have to do undergraduate? and when are u allowed to give LSAT. aftter undergraduate or after high school itself?
Studying Abroad - 3 Answers

Yes, there is now several pathways to a law degree. It may even be possible to do it earlier, such as by doing a certificate course in law as a stepping stone.
2 :
You would have to have a Bachelor degree first. You would take the LSAT during the last years of undergrad school. You would of had to of taken it and gotten your results back before you applied to law schools
3 :
In the US you will need a bachelors degree (or equivalent 4 year post high school degree) and take the LSAT to be admitted to law school. I think LSAT scores stay good for 3 years, most law school bound US students take the LSAT in the summer between their 3rd and 4th (and final) year of undergrad.

There is no best major. Any major (science, humanities, engineering, social science, etc) can get you into medical school. Pick the one that you are most interested in, as this will lead to a higher GPA. Harvard and Johns Hopkins are viewed as the best medical schools and constantly fight for the number 1 spot.
2 :
There is no special science major. I would take one that let me do research work to get my application noticed. SO it really depends on your interest. Now as far as cardiology first you must finish med school. Everyone graduates the same MD. Its the residency that you apply for after medical school that determines what kind of doctor you will be. But take it one step at a time. First just try to get into a US medical school.

Can you obtain financial aid in the USA for attending Grad School overseas(New Zealand.Australia)

Can you obtain financial aid in the USA for attending Grad School overseas(New Zealand.Australia)?
A few friends and I have been considering attending grad school in Australia/New Zealand. Obviously we would need to take out loans and I was wondering if these are easily obtainable. It's important to note that this is not a study abroad program within a United States University but actually attending a University there for Masters/PHD degrees.
Financial Aid - 3 Answers
Random Answers, Critics, Comments, Opinions :
1 :
Often times US Loan companies have a list of schools that they lend to and usually they are only in the US. I would suggest talking to your financial aid office at the school you're attending and see what they've had students do before. Also, because of the current economic down fall, many lending companies have had to close their opperations for a time. It may be very difficult to obtain a loan in the US, espcially if you don't have great credit.
2 :
If your school is listed here http://www.fafsa.ed.gov/FOTWWebApp/FSLoo... you can use federal student loans and grants to study there. Select "Foreign country" from the dropdown on the second page.
3 :
There are 8 universities in New Zealand: Auckland, AUT (Auckland) Waikato (Hamilton), Massey (Palmerston North), Victoria (Wellington), Canterbury (Christchurch), Lincoln (near Christchurch), and Otago (Dunedin). US Financial Aid is available for courses at Auckland, Canterbury, Victoria, Waikato and Massey. It also appears to be available at AUT. I could not find anything about US Financial Aid on Otago's website, but they do have a contact in International Student Services for US Finacial Aid - so it's very likely that you can get it to study at Otago, too. Lincoln does not participate in the US Federal Loan program, but is registered with a private loan provider.

What's the cheapest way to send books from USA to Taiwan

What's the cheapest way to send books from USA to Taiwan?
I'm buying primary school textbooks from USA for use in Taiwan. Is there a way to send them that's cheaper than through UPS or the US Post Office? Where maybe they charge by the size of the boxes/ containers instead of by the weight of the contents? Please help...

Easy! You bring the book with you on the plane to Taiwan, and give it to them there. See?
2 :
the post office will charge by size and weight. Generally only charging by size is cheaper as books can weigh a lot. If you want really cheap and you have time, send by boat. but mind you it will take like 2 months to get to taiwan then. (plus side is its a hades of a lot cheaper then by air.)
3 :
scan it. email installments to yourself. free.
4 :
First Class International would be appropiate for single books. It cuts out at 4 pounds. Something heavier than that would cost a lot to ship. Weight what you need to send and go to usps.com to calculate
5 :
US Flat Rate Box is the cheapest a large one will cost you over $40.00. Check for your textbook on ebooks.com I would also suggest buying used at GreenTextbooks.com - Saving the Planet One Textbook at a Time GreenTextbooks.com is your online leader for finding used textbooks, DVDs, CDs. For those finishing high school in Europe, can you please talk about how it works in the older grades. Does one choose what subjects to do, are there specific streams of study, etc. For those who did do math in grade 12 (or EU equivalent), what sort of things do you learn there. Thank You

here's the way it works in France when you're 15 you can choose between a lycee ( high school) of general education or a technical education one. both of them require a 3-year study before the baccalaureat in the general one the first year is common for everyone, then you choose between few main streams : maths/physics/biology , economics , or languages . then from there you'll have few different bacalaureat to choose from A : language B : economcis C : maths/physics D : biology they are only mainstreams, meaning that you'll still learn other things. in the technical high school, after a the first year you choose mainly between - electronics - mechanics - electronics + mechanics + math + physics. this one is a bit like the C bacalaureat but with less history/language

Well in england when now one starts secondary school. the classes are divided up into different groups, categorising the type of subjects to be done: Modern Studies which comprises of subjects such as Geography, english, english literature, history, science, social studies, physical education, agricultural science. Business SCIENCES Basiaclly those are the three main classes other classes inculde, auto mechanics, tailoring, beauty culture, typing, electrical instalation. now when one enters seconadry school in the uk they MUST do 10 subjects. Upon entry the subjects are grouped and the student chooses the group h e or she wants...NO THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY CHOICE IN THE MATTER AS TO EXACTLY WHICH SUBJECTS THEY WANT TO DO they only have the choice of the grouping. When however they reached to thier final year they are allowed to drop 3 of the 10 subjects. If they want to write more than 7 they can pay . The schools maximun amount of subjects one can write is 7 and up minimun is 5. After this they write an exam....students must pass five and more in order to continue thier studies. they are graded A B C . C is the lowest grade accepted. If one aquires 5 and more subjects they can then and only then enter in to its advanced level. This exams is known as ADVANED LEVELS ( a levels) this exams is the exam which determones if one can enter into university. Students can only sit up to 4 advanced level subjects. Depending on the field of study the pass requirements vary as well as the choice of subjects. to get into law one needs to have three (3) A level passes of which they must have a pass in history. Medicine, also three (3) but two of the three must be of a science subject. engineering same requirements as medicine.A level subjects are also grouped: MODERN STUDIES, SCIENCES AND BUSINESS. what field you want to get into you must enter the respective grouping. If you want to be a doctor but have no science subject you cant apply for medicine you have to take another route or simply sit the exam. A level usually takes two years to complete. There are no A levels in relation to auto mechanics tailoring, elctrical instalation. if one wnats to pursue a course of this kind the need to enroll in a technical vocational school sit the exams and then attend university.

in Germany, there are three different "highschools". If you want to build things or work with your hands (nothing to mantally stressing), you attend Haupschule. You take classes in the morning, than in the afternoon, you work as an aprentice. You attend Haupschule till you are about 16. To have an office job like secretary or telemarketer, you go to Realschule. You study pretty much all the subjects, just a lot less challenging. You finish around 17. If you want an uperclass job, like doctor or lawyer or teacher, you go to Gymnasium. Your major subjects are Math, German (like English to you), and another foreign language. You also study scinces, geography, religion, history, and another foreign language (no, i am not reapeting myself, most Gymansium students study 2). You go till about 13th grade. It starts at around 7:30 and ends around 1, but we don't do sports or electives at school, we go to AGs, which are like clubs.

If so,what do I need?Do I have to have specific grades or something?

Yes,you can.But it's a long process. Also you should know that The Ivy Leagues (Cornell,Columbia,Princeton,Yale,Harvard,University of Pennsylvania,Brown etc) have really high standards.Really good grades are not enough, you must have an impressive CV in order to stand out (eg. community service, foreign languages, excellence in music or sports etc) . Before doing anything, contact the American embassy in your country and ask if they have a specific bureau for people who want to study in the US.They can help you more. You could also check the websites of the Universities that interest you, they give many details on their requirements. After you get accepted at a University you'll be able to get a VISA and you're ready to go.
2 :
Yes you can actually. I know for a fact that Harvard accepts A-levels and IB. GCSE's are also highly thought of as well.
3 :
There are many, many universities in the USA. Go on line and find some you like. Contact them for application and info on obtaining right papers. Entrance requirements vary greatly. Reputations vary greatly. Course offerings and campus life styles vary greatly. Find a college or university that suits you and offers the course of study you want. Check out what happens to its graduates. Can they get jobs in places and in fields that you might want to work in. Knowing exactly what you want to get out of your university studies is crucial. There are many colleges in USA as well as the universities. Also small universities. Be careful since some "colleges" are profit-making. A state supported college or university is often your best buy. If you belong to a Christian denomination, your church may have colleges that you might want to attend.

I recently returned for england on a 10 day soccer (football) trip and would like to learn more about its history. I am not looking for normal reading material or British literature, just a text book or course like schools use for American History. Most courses online are likely to be university/college level which means they will be pricey. For my first post-secondary class on British history we used the textbook "Peoples of British Isles" by Lehmberg (Volume One) and Heyck(Volumes two and three). It may not be as simple as the textbooks used in many high school history classes, but it will give you a much better and in depth understanding of the history. You may also want to do a google scholar search for journal articles.

Would it be hard to get a job in the USA if i went to school and university in the UK

Would it be hard to get a job in the USA if i went to school and university in the UK?
Obviously for some jobs, like lawyers i would have to do a course in the US because US law is different but if it was a pretty much universal job would my qualifications mean anything and would they think of the universities like Bristol, Durham, Windsor etc as very good universities or not.

How hard is it to get a job after law school

How hard is it to get a job after law school ?
I have heard many law students complaining and saying how law sucks and how they wished that they never went to law school . I have also heard that if you don't graduate from the 10 top law schools in the USA , you won't be able to get a job after you are done . I need details and which types of lawyers are easier to get job these days . I mean what field of laws . Any details would be appreciated . Thanks

No one ever asks their lawyer which school they went to. You will still get a job fine even if you go to a state school. Many lawyers are not hired anyway. They set up their own private practive. And no matter what they are always so short of public defenders, any lawyer can get public defender work. Not the best paying but there is a lot of it.
2 :
VERY hard. Choosing a career is one of life's most important decisions. Be aware of what you are proposing on getting yourself into. Please do more research first. Reminder: We are in a World-wide Recession. Consider career paths that have available JOBS.<<<<< Warning> Jobs in the field of Law are drying up fast!! This is just not a good field to invest time and/or money into. This is a SHRINKING, crumbling, and dying vocational field. Many reasons. We now have computers. So, many people today (mistakenly) think they can do their own legal work, thanks to the Internet. Also, there are a lot of companies out there making very efficient legal software for the field of Law. Today's graduating lawyers tend to be very computer savvy, so they just do the work themselves to save themselves the cost of overhead. Also, the "Public" buys this legal software in order to get legal work done without the cost of an Attorney. Also, we simply already have way too many Legal Professionals - we have an absolute glut!! ("Legal Professionals" includes, but is not limited to: Attorneys/Lawyers, Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc) The field of Law has a mystique that actually exceeds reality. The field of Law is an overrated career - mostly by television. There are many myths regarding the field of Law: working as a Lawyer is mentally challenging (Actually, most work as an attorney involves routine paperwork: research, cite checking, drafting documents, and document review. Attorneys need to write down and track every activity they do, all day long [in 6 to 15 minutes increments, depending on the billing system] - a painstaking but necessary task), being an attorney is thrilling, high-powered, and glamorous (remember: television is fiction - the fictional lawyers on TV are ACTORS - the majority of work that an attorney does, does not happen in a courtroom), law students think that because they are good at arguing they will become great attorneys (actually being a great attorney is more in one's ability to mediate between differing sides and bringing them to agreement), as a lawyer I can correct injustices (actually legal decisions are more about reaching compromises than about right vs. wrong), guaranteed financial success (actually when salaries are compared, you also need to account for cost-of living expenses [most large law firms are in large cities - the bigger the city, the more cost-of-living expenses will be], payment of debts accrued while attending law school, and time needed to build a client base. Many large law firms require lawyers to work 60-80 hours per week.). Cost of law school to be lawyer, approx $150,000+. Be prepared to take on a LOT of debt.<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<<< There are no jobs in this vocational field. My family, coworkers, friends, acqaintances, etc. have been laid off left and right in this vocational field. Employers (usually law firms) in the field of Law today want employees with degrees from traditional colleges/universities. Those "certificates" you see advertised aren't worth the paper they are printed on - they are generally scams. (I found this out the hard way.) Also, the law school's program needs to be accredited by the American Bar Association - if it isn't, you are just wasting your time/money. Even if you finish law school, you won't be able to find a job when you are done. Since this vocational field is shrinking, many new attorneys/lawyers are, themselves, having to work "down" as Paralegals, Legal Assistants, Legal Secretaries, Bailiffs, Court Reporters, etc, etc, to simply try to keep some of their bills paid <<this would be your competition. And the competition is fierce!! Now... the law schools know this, but they won't tell you the truth >that the job market/economy is just SATURATED with way too many Legal Professionals. Instead the schools will feed you a fairytale and will LIE to you. The root of the problem is we have too many law schools. We are in a recession, and the schools are fighting for their own survival - they will tell students anything to get to the students' money. (Which is why they won't tell you the truth about the job market for the field of Law.) And these schools continue to recruit and churn out even more graduates.............Remember: law schools are BUSINESSES - their top concern is making money for themselves. If you don't believe me, then just do a SEARCH here on Yahoo Answers to see what other posters are saying about the current status of the field of Law. Call some local law firms - ask to speak to the Manager of Human Resources - ask them if they are hiring; ask them what they think about job availability in the field of Law.................. In the book "So You Want to be a Lawyer?" by Marianne Calabrese and Susanne Calabrese (ISBN 0-88391-136-1): "The United States has more lawyers than any other country in the world. About 38,000
3 :
It depends on what kind of job you are looking for, but in general, it is a very competitive market in the United States to be hired by an employer as a lawyer, whether the employer is a law firm, company, government agency or public interest organization. Associate positions in large law firms are the most competitive ones and if you are not from one of the top 14 law schools in the nation (as ranked by US News and World Report), your chances of getting an offer diminish the lower your school ranking falls in the ranking below 14, especially if you do not have a high GPA. If you're law school is outside the top 100 law schools (i.e. one of the other 100 plus law schools) you will probably never ever work in a large law firm. In addition, generally speaking, large law firms are the only firms that hire on a regular basis every year and offer a six figure salary for law school graduates (and the current economy has impacted so badly on large law firms that many of them are not hiring law school graduates even though they normally do so every year and even some law school graduates from the top 14 are scrounging around for any kind of work as a lawyer). The remaining areas of employment are from companies and small law firms, which often do not hire on a regular basis and usually offer significantly less money than big law firms for law school graduates, and government agencies and public interest law groups, which may hire on a regular basis but offer salaries on the low end (20k-50k). While these areas are not as competitve as large law firms, they are still comptetive nonetheless and the lower your law school ranking and grades are the less chance you will have of being hired. The easiest source of employment is as a contract attorney, meaning you are hired on a project by project basis and paid an hourly wage without health or employee benefits. Even this work is often not attainable by graduates from low ranked law schools and in the current environment the work involved is repetitive, mundane and demoralizing (basic document review, document production and document coding) and the pay is low (currently less than $30 per hour on many NYC contract assignments). Additionally, more and more of this kind of work is being outsourced to countries like India. In general the disproportionate number of law school graduates to entry level law jobs guarantess that a significant amount of law school graduates will not be able to secure employment as a lawyer within 1 year of graduation and many law school graduates never become employed as lawyers as a result. In addition, because U.S. law matriculation does not involve apprenticeship/articling, and the official law school curriculum for ABA certified law schools has no mandatory practical training clinics or classes, most law school graduates are not even properly trained to practice law on their own even with regards to the most basic aspects of legal practice such as filing a civil complain/answer, or incorporating a business. Most would probably end up committing legal malpractice at some point (many who try to practice on their own straight out of law school do) without proper training and guidance from a more experienced lawyer. Finally, you can't just "get public defender work." You have to work for the public defender's office and they have limited funds to hire attorneys so the volume of work is irrelevant to the availability of jobs. Funding is the issue.

You may need to become a legal permanent US resident before you can attend college here. I'm not a US citizen, but I moved from Canada 8 years ago, so I have legal residency and a green card. You might be able to apply for a student visa. Talk to your school's counselor about it.

Yes they will accept you even if you were completely illegal here. The real question here is weather your going to be receiving a job here in the USA

Many US law schools prefer that you study something less directly related to the law for your undergrad degree. I'm not saying that studying criminology for your BA will keep you out of all US law schools, but... law schools, to be honest, don't love that major. Law schools prefer that they are the ones that train you in the law. They feel that if you've majored in criminology, they have to "untrain" you, and worse, that you may come in feeling like you already know it all. That said, if you truly love that major, do it. It's likely you'll do better in a major that you really like, than in one that you're just taking because you think a law school would want to see it - and your undergrad grades are very, very important to law school admissions. To get into a US law school, you'll need to take the LSAT as you approach the end of your bachelors degree years. If you study at a US law school, can you practice in Canada? What hoops must you jump through? These are things you'd want to research while you study your BA.

It depends on what courses you took and how they translate as American credits. It's a very broad question.
2 :
There are accreditation agencies that can evaluate and match courses from one university (even from a foreign country) to the equivalent course and credit in an American university. But when I tried to find one of these agencies with an internet search, all I could find was schools explaining their procedures for transferring credits. This makes sense, since the idea is for a student coming to the U.S. to continue his or her studies. If you are still in Pakistan, you might want to speak to a school advisor. They are probably familiar with the process and can point you in the right direction. If you are already in the U.S. look up a local college and inquire there. If you need additional hours to qualify for the same BA, I'm sure they would be glad to help. Oh, by the way, from what I remember about those agencies, they do charge a fee to research the credits and issue a formal report.. But I guess that's no surprise. Best of luck and Welcome to the U.S.

How school works in the USA

How school works in the USA?
Hi, I'm Damien living in France. I've heard there are differences between US and French schools Could you explain me what stuff you learn, especially when you are 14 or 15 (case of my brother)? And when happen the main degree for a teen in the US? Thnk for your answer, have a nice day Damien

There are some differences. When you are 14 or 15 you are usually in the 8th or 9th grade, possibly 10th. You study history (usually world history, world geography or european history), science (bilogy or chemistry or earth science), Math (anywhere from pre-algebra to functions analytical geometry depending on skill level) English, and possibly a foreign language and elective such as art or music. You graduate high school in the 12th grade (around 17,18 years old) when you get your diploma. you can go on to college for 2 or 4 years where there are various degrees availible, and graduate school for an additional few if you wish. School is not year round, it is cut into 4 quarters and 2 semesters with the summer vacation between grades that lasts around 2 months depending on where you go to school with small holiday breaks throughout the year.
2 :
I don't know much about education in France specifically, but in Europe in general there is a lot more emphasis on geography and foreign languages. For younger students, arithmetic, spelling, and reading are the main topics. For 14 and 15 English, Math, and Science are the big things. You get to choose as you get older.

Are schools in the USA assigning math homework over the holiday break?
I like reading through the questions, but it surprised me how many grade school, high school and college math assignment questions seem to be here yesterday and today. I know not everyone celebrates Christmas, but it's just puzzling to me. When I was in school and college, we didn't do assignments over the breaks. Has that all changed these days?

I don't know about the USA, but I'm a retired Canadian teacher and once the departmentals (provincial wide) came in, you can bet your socks I assigned things to be done over any holiday. Holiday time is time for review and refining skills; exams for average and below average students are a nightmare and it comes down to 3 hours (maybe 3-1/2 under certain circumstances). Those #$%$$$# exams certainly changed teaching styles; indeed they ended a great many things that made good teachers better and average students able to do the work. Now the object is to see how many tricky questions can be put on an exam and what how to write one where the bell curve is king and its apex is at 63.5. True facts. Edit ==== That 63.5 cost the Alberta government and its citizens 10 million dollars a term. Think what could be done with that in the classroom.
2 :
My (USA private) highschool used to have finals after the so-called break; so you were almost forced into studying during your so called vacation. It is not common practice. Most people just get 2 weeks off.
3 :
I've been wondering about that too, but the other persons who've answered made some sense of the situation. There's less questions than usual though. I like answering the ones which haven't been answered in over a day, and there's very few of those lately.

There are so many great boarding schools. I know you are in a rush, but the question you should ask is which boarding school is best for you based on your personality, talents, abilities and interests. Most kids start kindergarten when they're 4 or 5. Some states you have to be 5 by a certain date, Aug 1 or Sept 15 for instance. Some you start first grade the calendar year you turn 6 even if it's in December. That's a local choice. My granddaughter turned 6 in February and she's in kindergarten. Her brother is 8 and he's in 3rd grade. Elementary, grade or grammar school is grades 1-5 or 1-6 or 1-8, again depending on local custom and whether it's a public school or parochial school. The term used for this level of school differs around the country, but it all means the same thing. Public schools usually have an elementary school, then middle school which would be 6th, 7th and 8th grade, then high school. We usually refer to the grade in high school as freshman, sophomore, junior and senior. They can also be called 9th, 10th, 11th and 12th grade, but that's not really common. Parish schools and private schools are usually Kindergarten through 8th grade. Sometimes private schools go all the way through high school. I was almost 6 when I started kindergarten because my birthday is September 30 and the cut off was September 15. I had to wait an extra year. I was almost 15 when I graduated from 8th grade, but most kids are 14. My nephew is 14 in 8th grade. His brother is 11 in 6th grade, but he's the youngest 6th grader and since that's the lowest grade in his school, he's the youngest in the school. Most kids graduate from high school around the age of 18, although some may still be 17. There were girls in my class who wouldn't be 18 until August, and I turned 19 in September.

What will you say to your school age children when the USA goes down in defeat in Iraq

What will you say to your school age children when the USA goes down in defeat in Iraq?
Practice! The time is near for the United States to run like they did on 30th April 1975. Defeat is coming. The children must know the truth.

You hit it on the head. But Vietnam was not a "defeat" - we abandoned the people who were our friends (and the many cronies), and soon after we left, the north consolidated power, and began killing our friends. So we have deniability! aren't we slimey! Iraq will be a mess after we leave, but noone will rise to consolidate power, and put iraq back together again for a long time. So again, we will avoid the word defeat..... Still, we cannot fix their internal problems for them. They need us to leave them alone, and let them get back to hating each other... Aloha!

Um, assuming there IS defeat (seems like wishful thinking on your part), I'll say, "Hey, why are you here? I don't remember having you. Now that you exist, though, I ought to tell the US lost the Iraq War." Kid: "Can I have a popsicle?" Oh GOD, the shame!

Now is the time to be telling your children what is happening in the WORLD, not when the demcommies have us retreating in Iraq. THIS IS WHAT THEY SHOULD BE TOLD:::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::::: This was a very well thought out and excellently written explanation of what is happening. THE WAR If you can't read this it only goes to show how lazy the american people are!!!! Please take the time to read the essay below by Dr. Chong. It is without a doubt the most logical and well thought out piece I have read yet on the war on terror. This WAR is for REAL! Dr. Vernon Chong, Major General, USAF, Retired Tuesday, July 12, 2005. To get out of a difficulty, one usually must go through it. Our country is now facing the most serious threat to its existence, as we know it, that we have faced in your lifetime and mine (which includes WWII). The deadly seriousness is greatly compounded by the fact that there are very few of us who think we can possibly lose this war and even fewer who realize what losing really means. First, let's examine a few basics: 1. When did the threat to us start? Many will say September 11, 2001. The answer as far as the United States is concerned is 1979, 22 years prior to September 2001, with the following attacks on us: * Iran Embassy Hostages, 1979; * Beirut, Lebanon Embassy 1983; * Beirut, Lebanon Marine Barracks 1983; * Lockerbie, Scotland Pan-Am flight to New York 1988; * First New York World Trade Center attack 1993; * Dhahran, Saudi Arabia Khobar Towers Military complex 1996; * Nairobi, Kenya US Embassy 1998; * Dares Salaam, Tanzania US Embassy 1998; * Aden, Yemen USS Cole 2000; * New York World Trade Center 2001; * Pentagon 2001. (Note that during the period from 1981 to 2001 there were 7,581 terrorist attacks worldwide). 2. Why were we attacked? Envy of our position, our success, and our freedoms. The attacks happened during the administrations of Presidents Carter, Reagan, Bush 1, Clinton and Bush 2. We cannot fault either the Republicans or Democrats as there were no provocations by any of the presidents or their immediate predecessors, Presidents Ford or Carter. 3. Who were the attackers? In each case, the attacks on the US were carried out by Muslims. 4. What is the Muslim population of the World? 25%. 5. Isn't the Muslim Religion peaceful? Hopefully, but that is really not material. There is no doubt that the predominately Christian population of Germany was peaceful, but under the dictatorial leadership of Hitler (who was also Christian), that made no difference. You either went along with the administration or you were eliminated. There were 5 to 6 million Christians killed by the Nazis for political reasons (including 7,000 Polish priests). (see http://www.nazis.testimony.co.uk/7-a.htm... Thus, almost the same number of Christians were killed by the Nazis, as the six million holocaust Jews who were killed by them, and we seldom heard of anything other than the Jewish atrocities. Although Hitler kept the world focused on the Jews, he had no hesitancy about killing anyone who got in his way of exterminating the Jews or of taking over the world - German, Christian or any others. Same with the Muslim terrorists. They focus the world on the US, but kill all in the way -- their own people or the Spanish, French or anyone else. The point here is that just like the peaceful Germans were of no protection to anyone from the Nazis, no matter how many peaceful Muslims there may be, they are no protection for us from the terrorist Muslim leaders and what they are fanatically bent on doing -- by their own pronouncements -- killing all of us "infidels." I don't blame the peaceful Muslims. What would you do if the choice was shut up or die? 6. So who are we at war with? There is no way we can honestly respond that it is anyone other than the Muslim terrorists. Trying to be politically correct and avoid verbalizing this conclusion can well be fatal. There is no way to win if you don't clearly recognize and articulate who you are fighting. So with that background, now to the two major questions: 1. Can we lose this war? 2. What does losing really mean? If we are to win, we must clearly answer these two pivotal questions. We can definitely lose this war, and as anomalous as it may sound, the major reason we can lose is that so many of us simply do not fathom the answer to the second question - What does losing mean? It would appear that a great many of us think that losing the war means hanging our heads, bringing the troops home and going on about our business, like post Vietnam. This is as far from the truth as one can get. What losing really means is: We would no longer be the premier country in the world. The attacks will not subside, but rather will steadily increase. Remember, they want us dead, not just quiet. If they had just wanted us quiet, they would not have produced an increasing series of attacks against us, over the past 18 years. The plan was clearly, for terrorists to attack us, until we were neutered and submissive to them. We would of course have no future support from other nations, for fear of reprisals and for the reason that they would see, we are impotent and cannot help them. They will pick off the other non-Muslim nations, one at a time. It will be increasingly easier for them. They already hold Spain hostage. It doesn't matter whether it was right or wrong for Spain to withdraw its troops from Iraq. Spain did it because the Muslim terrorists bombed their train and told them to withdraw the troops. Anything else they want Spain to do will be done. Spain is finished. The next will probably be France. Our one hope on France is that they might see the light and realize that if we don't win, they are finished too, in that they can't resist the Muslim terrorists without us. However, it may already be too late for France. France is already 20% Muslim and fading fast! If we lose the war, our production, income, exports and way of life will all vanish as we know it. After losing, who would trade or deal with us, if they were threatened by the Muslims. If we can't stop the Muslims, how could anyone else? The Muslims fully know what is riding on this war, and therefore are completely committed to winning, at any cost. We better know it too and be likewise committed to winning at any cost. Why do I go on at such lengths about the results of losing? Simple. Until we recognize the costs of losing, we cannot unite and really put 100% of our thoughts and efforts into winning. And it is going to take that 100% effort to win. So, how can we lose the war? Again, the answer is simple. We can lose the war by "imploding." That is, defeating ourselves by refusing to recognize the enemy and their purpose, and really digging in and lending full support to the war effort. If we are united, there is no way that we can lose. If we continue to be divided, there is no way that we can win! Let me give you a few examples of how we simply don't comprehend the life and death seriousness of this situation. President Bush selects Norman Mineta as Secretary of Transportation. Although all of the terrorist attacks were committed by Muslim men between 17 and 40 years of age, Secretary Mineta refuses to allow profiling. Does that sound like we are taking this thing seriously? This is war! For the duration, we are going to have to give up some of the civil rights we have become accustomed to. We had better be prepared to lose some of our civil rights temporarily or we will most certainly lose all of them permanently. And don't worry that it is a slippery slope. We gave up plenty of civil rights during WWII, and immediately restored them after the victory and in fact added many more since then. Do I blame President Bush or President Clinton before him? No, I blame us for blithely assuming we can maintain all of our Political Correctness, and all of our civil rights during this conflict and have a clean, lawful, honorable war. None of those words apply to war. Get them out of your head. Some have gone so far in their criticism of the war and/or the Administration that it almost seems they would literally like to see us lose. I hasten to add that this isn't because they are disloyal. It is because they just don't recognize what losing means. Nevertheless, that conduct gives the impression to the enemy that we are divided and weakening. It concerns our friends, and it does great damage to our cause. Of more recent vintage, the uproar fueled by the politicians and media regarding the treatment of some prisoners of war, perhaps exemplifies best what I am saying. We have recently had an issue, involving the treatment of a few Muslim prisoners of war, by a small group of our military police. These are the type prisoners who just a few months ago were throwing their own people off buildings, cutting off their hands, cutting out their tongues and otherwise murdering their own people just for disagreeing with Saddam Hussein. And just a few years ago these same type prisoners chemically killed 400,000 of their own people for the same reason. They are also the same type of enemy fighters, who recently were burning Americans, and dragging their charred corpses through the streets of Iraq. And still more recently, the same type of enemy that was and is providing videos to all news sources internationally, of the beheading of American prisoners they held. Compare this with some of our press and politicians, who for several days have thought and talked about nothing else but the "humiliating" of some Muslim prisoners -- not burning them, not dragging their charred corpses through the streets, not beheading them, but "humiliating" them. Can this be for real? The politicians and pundits have even talked of impeachment of the Secretary of Defense. If this doesn't show the complete lack of comprehension and understanding of the seriousness of the enemy we are fighting, the life and death struggle we are in and the disastrous results of losing this war, nothing can. To bring our country to a virtual political standstill over this prisoner issue makes us look like Nero playing his fiddle as Rome burned -- totally oblivious to what is going on in the real world. Neither we, nor any other country, can survive this internal strife. Again I say, this does not mean that some of our politicians or media people are disloyal. It simply means that they are absolutely oblivious to the magnitude of the situation we are in, and into which the Muslim terrorists have been pushing us, for many years. Remember, the Muslim terrorists stated goal is to kill all infidels! That translates into ALL non-Muslims -- not just in the United States, but throughout the world. We are the last bastion of defense. We have been criticized for many years as being 'arrogant.' That charge is valid in at least one respect. We are arrogant in that we believe that we are so good, powerful and smart, that we can win the hearts and minds of all those who attack us, and that with both hands tied behind our back, we can defeat anything bad in the world! We can't! If we don't recognize this, our nation as we know it will not survive, and no other free country in the world will survive if we are defeated. And finally, name any Muslim countries throughout the world that allow freedom of speech, freedom of thought, freedom of religion, freedom of the press, equal rights for anyone -- let alone everyone, equal status or any status for women, or that have been productive in one single way that contributes to the good of the world. This has been a long way of saying that we must be united on this war or we will be equated in the history books to the self-inflicted fall of the Roman Empire. If, that is, the Muslim leaders will allow history books to be written or read. If we don't win this war right now, keep a close eye on how the Muslims take over France in the next 5 years or less. They will continue to increase the Muslim population of France and continue to encroach little by little, on the established French traditions. The French will be fighting among themselves, over what should or should not be done, which will continue to weaken them and keep them from any united resolve. Doesn't that sound eerily familiar? Democracies don't have their freedoms taken away from them by some external military force. Instead, they give their freedoms away, politically correct piece by politically correct piece. And they are giving those freedoms away to those who have shown, worldwide that they abhor freedom and will not apply it to you or even to themselves, once they are in power. They have universally shown that when they have taken over, they then start brutally killing each other over who will be the few who control the masses. Will we ever stop hearing from the politically correct, about the "peaceful Muslims"? I close on a hopeful note, by repeating what I said above. If we are united, there is no way that we can lose. I hope the factions in our country will begin to focus on the critical situation we are in, and will unite to save our country. It is your future we are talking about! Do whatever you can to preserve it. After reading the above, we all must do this not only for ourselves, but our children, our grandchildren, our country and the world. Whether Democrat or Republican, conservative or liberal and that includes the Politicians and media of our country and the free world

"Never be like George Bush when you grow up."

What will you say to your schoolage children when the USA fleas Iraq tomorrow and then terrorists blew up their school, but thank God your child was home sick that day?
7 :
My child is in IRAQ and i am very proud of him and who says that we will be defeated! Ecrudite you are such a hateful person you are constantly putting down our military and i am sick of it !! You are probably some little weakling who was always picked on and now you think you can BASh every one else on here ! You cannot be an american with the attitude that you have and if you are you need to move to another country that is full of heartless&hateful people like yourself!!!!!!!!! GOD BLESS AMERICA AND ALL THE TROOPS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
8 :
Good thing we have the internet now. No way you could have fit that whole thing on a sandwich board.
9 :
Your not going to say anything to your kids because if you think that we could lose to Iraq your out of your mind unless the next pres. pulls out while were there and you consider it a defeat although all we were doing was trying to fix their screwed up country which may not be the outcome
10 :
I'll tell them that the U.S. didn't run! When they ask about why the U.S. is over there to begin with, I'll tell them honestly that a bunch of half witted, fruit loops, with dreams of grandeur thought that they could attack America on it's own soil and get away with it. The U.S. didn't run from Vietnam, they pulled out because of a treaty between the North and South in that country, and it wasn't considered a war, but a policing action. The only thing the U.S. did wrong there was let the media make the men and women who were over there take the bad rep that the government should've had to eat. My hat goes off to every single vet from any war or conflict, and so will my children's. Not just because I am one, but because they all deserve the respect they've earned.
11 :
i will tell them to join the military for the same reason i did - all the cute guys!
12 :
Important is talking to the kids about that is the age. They need to understand that, what are you talking. Also what about this war we lost.... not done yet, I don't think it's so bad. There is always winner and looser, by the games too.
13 :
You might want to study your history. The military never lost the war, the civilians got us out just before we went postal of them congs. Anyhooo, if they just let's do out thing and to actually capture people and hand them over to the Iraqis so they can do the interrogating and then let them Iraqis use the night and take out some targets of "opportunity", we would otay. So, we are not losing, unless you are Reid, but then again, chances are that he lost all of his quarters at the local 7-11 in Reno.
